Meditation Reprise

Meditation Reprise

Meditation Reprise (2026) is an ensemble dance that mourns and commemorates the lives of Black Americans who have been victims of Police brutality in the United States. The work includes voice-over recording of text written and performed by artist Carrie Mae Weems and features visual artwork by Titus Kaphar. In addition the work draws on a reimagining of Steve Reich’s powerful 1966 composition, “Come Out” which initially sampled the voice of Daniel Hamm, a member of the “Harlem 6” who stated, "I had to, like, open the bruise up, and let some of the bruise blood come out to show them" referencing what he had to do to his own body to convince police that he needed medical attention. Ultimately the work stands as an urgent call to combat injustice in the United States and around the world.
